Are you ready and able to be a community ‘first responder’?

If a bushfire or flood hits your neighbourhood, do you have the skills to be a community ‘first responder’?

Sure, you can hold a hose to wash mud from your neighbour’s home, help move damaged furniture, or cook them a warm dinner, but are you ready to bandage a laceration, help during an asthma attack, or treat a burn before an ambulance arrives?

And what if your own family and friends experience a health emergency? Will you be able to help? Maybe even save lives?

#SummerIsComing

As the Queensland summer season approaches, so too does the increased threat of storms, floods, bushfires, heat waves – and the health risks, injuries and property damage that they potentially bring.

Bushfire

Fallen trees, damaged homes, flooded cars, fallen power lines, destroyed belongings, lost pets, cardiac arrest, personal injuries – there’s never-ending list of things that can go wrong due to Queensland’s summer weather.

Our communities primarily look to the government and the military to come to our aid during our natural disasters, but experts in the field note that it is actually your surrounding community members who will be the first to offer help. They are the true ‘first responders’.

Government services can be stretched beyond capacity during serious disasters, they need to prioritise providing help to those worst affected, and may take time to actually reach you and your neighbours.

The military itself has acknowledged that repeated callouts to help communities impacted by natural disasters is reducing its focus on its core role, defending Australia.

It can be hours or even days before ‘official’ support arrives. It is your community members who will need to act first and fast!
